FAQ
Straight answers to the practical objections we hear most from farms around the region.

Do you work with farms across the whole of Dumfries and Galloway?
Yes. We are based at Mouswald near Dumfries and work with farms from Eskdale and Annandale to the Machars and the Rhins, and everywhere in between. The first review can be at the farm or online, and the software runs wherever your farm computer is.
Can you come out to the farm?
Yes, and we usually prefer to. Sitting in the farm office with the person who does the job is the fastest way to understand it. A screen-share works just as well if that is easier around milking or lambing.
Our broadband is poor. Will it still work?
Usually. Suitable workflows run locally on the farm computer and only need the connection for updates, monitoring and web dashboards. We are specific about which parts need connectivity rather than promising 'works offline' for everything.
We already have herd software.
Good. We are not trying to replace it. Our work often starts where your existing software stops: the manual steps between the processor file, the herd program, ScotEID and the accounts package.
We just use Excel.
That is not automatically a problem. If the spreadsheet works, keep it. We look for the repetitive work around it that software can handle.
It only takes 20 minutes.
How often? Twenty minutes every day is roughly 120 hours a year on a dairy farm. Frequency matters more than how small the task feels once.
I don't want all my data in the cloud.
It does not necessarily need to be. Where technically appropriate, local software processes files directly on the farm computer. The cloud is used for licensing, configuration, updates, notifications and web access where those add value.
What if it makes a mistake?
Important workflows include validation, logging, exception handling and human approval where it matters, such as movement submissions and scheme claims. Software should fail safely and tell you, not silently.
What if our software or the processor's file changes?
Ongoing support and compatibility maintenance are part of the reason for a managed service model. When your other systems change, we keep the integration working.
Why monthly?
Because the service continues after installation: updates, support, monitoring, configuration and hosted services where required. You are buying a maintained service, not an abandoned executable.
Does automation remove our compliance responsibility?
No. Automation makes the information easier to prepare, validate and manage. Legal and compliance responsibility for movements, claims and inspections stays with the farm, and approval steps are kept where they matter.
Should everything be automated?
No. If a process happens twice a year and takes ten minutes, bespoke software will not make financial sense, and we will say so. Automation suits repetitive, predictable, rules-based work where the value exceeds the implementation and support cost.
